Transit
of
Mercury

Approximately 10 members of the Q.U.A.C. and R.A.S.C. dragged themselves out of bed at entirely unreasonable hours to see this phenomena.

Although some heavy cloud obscured the sun for parts of the time, the event was viewed quite satisfactorily. The image of the sun was projected through the eyepiece of the telescope onto a screen, where it could be viewed safely and easily. Mercury, appearing as a black dot, moved slowly across the disk. The final contact was observed under good cloud conditions (i.e. their absence!) at 8:18 as predicted by the Ephemeris.

I should point out that several of the group present that morning arrived even much earlier than 6:30 a.m. (5:00) in order to do some general observing before morning twilight set in. Saturn was the main object of interest observed. That pretty well sums up another of our famous observing sessions.

Special meeting...especially for those members interested in observing - both seeing and photographing. We will start with a film or short lecture to get things going. While we have some coffee and cookies to get us primed for the cold upstairs on the roof, we will let those who have put on projects already, display some of their results (lets get some good prints, you photofreaks). Then we will start a long observing session on the 15" and other small telescopes that our observers' group will bring.

We will have several hours of films if the weather is bad, so no one need worry about that. [References: Regulus March 1974 #1, March 1974 #2]

Summer Solstice Outing at Leo's place.
[Reference: Regulus, June 1977 #1]

The Summer Solstice Outing was also poorly attended. This enabled the participants to spend more time water-skiing, eating, and looking through telescopes, The only thing that marred this outing was the mosquitos. They were a bother, since they kept stealing the telescopes. [Reference: Regulus, July 1977 #1]

It was interesting to see three telescopes and one pair of tripod-mounted binoculars set up all in a row. In the water-skiing competition, the team of E. and P. Brown took first place, and D. Baker took second. Let's hope the astrophotos of the moon turnout well. Finally, a hearty "No Thanks" to the mosquitoes that appeared late at night. You wouldn't believe......... GA'77
Toronto

From June30 to July 3rd, two members of our centre, Paul Brown and I, attended the annual Assembly of the R. A. S. C. in Toronto. It was most interesting, educational, and enjoyable - the sort of thing to inspire one with enthusiasm for his hobby because he gets to see what other members and centres are doing, and, believe me, what some of them are doing is nothing less than fantastic. I wish that all of you could have had the chance! A 16-page report prepared by the First Vice-president of the Society was accepted, andit is a report which has implications for all centres and all members, and which, I feel, proposes certain things which could be very helpful to our centre. During the meeting of April fourth, Leo gave a talk entitled Faint Light in The Night Sky. It concentrated on the following: (1) Zodiacal Light, (2) Gegenschein (or Counterglow) (3) Interplanetary Light, (4) Nightglow, (5) Integrated Starlight. Once again weather conditions meant it was not the most favorable observing night ever recorded.

Total
Solar
Eclipse

Mike Fayette and Lyte, Angelika and Bob [Hackett], and David [Levy] viewed totality from a very short distance north of the centre line, at a site just south of Lundar; Mike Kennedy was precisely on or extremely close to the centre line, at a site on Highway #6 at or near Clarkleigh; Chris Sargeant and I [Leo Enright] were south of the centre line, at Gimli airfield almost due east of where the others were.

Holleford
Crater
Meteor
Outing

The 2nd outing of the summer for the Centre was to the Holleford meteor crater. A second outing of the summer, a trip by some members of our centre to Holleford Crater, was also a chance to explore a very interesting locale. It took place on Sunday, July 8th, and in some ways was similar to our first trip to our nearest confirmed meteorite crater, the one taken by some members of our centre in 1977. This time it was a chance for Mike,Lyte, and David to explore the crater for the first time.

Photographs were taken at the new plaque, at drill hole number one, and number two, at the mid-point, and at various other places. It is pleasant to see that the plaque, at one time sadly vandalized, has been replaced by a beautiful historical plaque near the crest of the rim at the south-west edge of the crater.

Once again we are reminded that our centre has in its "backyard" the second oldest of the continent's recognized meteorite craters something that we could well display to visitors from other centres, since few such sites are so accessible and easily visited or explored.

Club's Night at Queen's U
We had a very interesting Club's Night at Queen's University on October 3rd. We had a chance to talk to a good number of students, to explore their interest in astronomy and it is hoped that we will have some of them as regular members of our centre. It was certainly good to see several of them at the meeting the following night. I hope they enjoyed the slides, and hope that they and others join our group on October 18th and in the coming months.
